Cookies

What are cookies?

Cookies are files that can be downloaded to your computer from websites. They are tools that play an essential role in providing many information society services. Among other things, they allow a website to store and retrieve information about a user’s browsing habits or equipment and, depending on the information obtained, can be used to identify the user and improve the services offered.

Types of cookies

Depending on the entity that manages the domain from which the cookies are sent and processes the data received, two types of cookies can be distinguished

Two types can be distinguished:

  • First-party cookies: those sent to the user’s terminal equipment from a computer or domain managed by the publisher itself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
  • Third-party cookies: those sent to the user’s terminal equipment by a computer or domain not managed by the publisher, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.

In the event that the cookies are installed by a computer or domain managed by the publisher, but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered as the publisher’s own cookies. There is also a second classification according to the length of time they remain stored in the client’s browser,

These can be:

  • Session cookies: designed to collect and store data during the user’s access to a website. Typically used to store information that only needs to be retained to provide the service requested by the user on a single occasion (e.g. a list of products purchased).
  • Persistent cookies: the data remains stored on the terminal and is accessible and processable for a period of time specified by the cookie manager, which can range from a few minutes to several years.

Finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies depending on the purpose for which the data received is processed:

  • Technical cookies: those that allow the user to browse a website, platform or application and use the various options or services available on it, such as, for example, controlling traffic and data communication, session identification, access to restricted areas, memorising the elements that make up an order, carrying out the process of purchasing an order, submitting a request to register or participate in an event, using security data while browsing, or using the data to access the website, or to access the various services available on it.
  • personalisation cookies: these allow the user to access the service with certain general characteristics predefined according to a set of criteria on the user’s terminal, such as, for example, the language, the type of browser through which the service is accessed, the regional configuration from which the service is accessed, etc.
  • the language, the type of browser through which the user accesses the service, the regional configuration from which the user accesses the service, etc.
  • Analysis cookies: these allow the person responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of the users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookie is
  • are used to measure the activity of the websites, application or platform and to create browsing profiles of the users of these websites, applications and platforms in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of data on the use made by the users of the service.
  • Advertising cookies: allow the management, in the most efficient way possible, of advertising spaces.
  • Behavioural advertising cookies: these store information on the behaviour of users obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which allows the development of a specific profile in order to display advertising based on it.
  • External social network cookies: these are used to allow visitors to interact with the content of various social platforms (Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) and are created only for users of these social networks. The conditions for the use of these cookies and the information collected
  • are regulated by the privacy policy of the respective social platform.
